A new image in ESA’s Earth from Space series, taken by the Pleiades Neo mission, shows Toulouse in France. Terracotta tiles on its roofs explain why the city is called ‘the pink city’ (la ville rose). From orbit, one of the central features is the Garonne, which winds through the centre on its way from the Pyrenees to an estuary near Bordeaux. Many bridges cross the river and reach the Ile du Grand Ramier, a cluster of islands south of the centre, on which Toulouse Stadium’s white oval stands out. Viewers can also pick out the Brienne, Midi and Garonne canals, Matabiau railway station and the University of Toulouse, one of Europe’s oldest. Near the station, one rectangle looks almost grey rather than red: it is Terre Cabade, the historic cemetery. The two Pleiades Neo satellites, orbiting since 2021, can show details down to 30 centimetres, and ESA handles their images through a programme for missions run by other agencies.
