Astronauts’ Hearts Adapt to Months in Orbit and Pass a Mars-Like Test

C1 · 4 dakikalık okuma · Kaynak: Northwestern University, 19 Ekim 2026

Metin

Before people travel to Mars, NASA needs to know whether a heart that has spent months in weightlessness can cope with a planet whose gravity is roughly one-third of Earth’s. A study in the journal Circulation, led by Northwestern Medicine with UT Southwestern and UT Houston, followed 13 astronauts on missions of about six months aboard the International Space Station. Ultrasound images of the heart were taken before, during and after each flight; in orbit, crew members scanned one another every few weeks while researchers on Earth followed the recordings. In the first two weeks, the hearts filled with less blood and pumped less with each beat, but these measures gradually moved back toward their preflight values. The team credits this adaptation to demanding daily workouts lasting up to two hours. After landing, the astronauts were tilted 22 degrees upward to imitate Martian gravity, and their hearts coped about as well as they had when standing on Earth before launch.

Beş ifade

  • weightlessness: ağırlıksızlık
  • cope with: ile başa çıkmak, üstesinden gelmek

  • imitate: taklit etmek, benzerini oluşturmak

YDS mini sorusu

According to the passage, the researchers tilted the astronauts 22 degrees upward after landing in order to ----.

  1. record how much blood their hearts pumped in the first two weeks
  2. replace the daily workouts they had done aboard the space station
  3. train them to scan one another’s hearts with ultrasound devices
  4. compare their hearts with those of crew members still in orbit
  5. imitate the weaker gravity that crew members would face on Mars

Once the astronauts were back on Earth, tilting them upward by 22 degrees was the team’s way of mimicking the lower gravity of Mars.
