New Bacteria Found in Leftover Prostate Cancer DNA Data

Metin

Researchers at the University of East Anglia have reconstructed the genomes of 18 new bacterial species using DNA data from men with prostate cancer. When tumour or blood samples are sequenced, a small share of the reads does not belong to human DNA and is usually discarded as noise. The team kept these fragments instead and, through a method called metagenomic assembly, rebuilt 249 nearly complete bacterial genomes from 194 patients, screening 2,176 datasets gathered by the international Pan Prostate Cancer Group for other research purposes. No extra samples had to be collected. Most of the microbes are oral organisms, and Porphyromonas, the group containing the chief microbe behind gum disease, turned up most often. The researchers stress that they are not claiming these organisms cause cancer. Rather, the genomes, predicted growth conditions and a validated DNA test for one species give scientists tools to examine, one species at a time, whether any of them is linked to aggressive disease.

YDS mini sorusu

It is clear from the passage that the researchers were able to identify the new bacteria because ----.

  1. they collected fresh tissue samples from 194 prostate cancer patients
  2. oral bacteria had already been shown to cause aggressive prostate cancer
  3. they grew the species in the laboratory before sequencing them
  4. they retained non-human DNA reads that are normally thrown away
  5. the Pan Prostate Cancer Group designed its datasets to study microbes
Cevabı ve açıklamasını göster

Doğru cevap: D

Metne göre dizileme sırasında insan DNA’sına ait olmayan küçük okuma payı genellikle gürültü sayılıp atılır; ekip bu parçaları saklayıp bakteri genomlarını yeniden kurmuştur. Yeni örnek toplanmamıştır; araştırmacılar bu bakterilerin kansere yol açtığını iddia etmediklerini vurgular; türler laboratuvarda üretilmemiş, yalnızca üreme koşulları tahmin edilmiştir; veri kümeleri de başka araştırma amaçlarıyla toplanmıştır. Bu nedenle doğru cevap D’dir.

The team held on to the non-human fragments that sequencing normally treats as noise and used them to assemble bacterial genomes.
