Kentleşme, tropiklerin kuş çeşitliliğindeki üstünlüğünü aşındırıyor

Cities Are Eroding the Tropics’ Lead in Bird Diversity

C1 · 4 dakikalık okuma · Kaynak: McGill University, 14 Ekim 2026

Metin

For tens of thousands of years, birds and plants have been more varied near the equator than at higher latitudes, a pattern ecologists call the latitudinal diversity gradient. A McGill University study published in PNAS suggests that urban growth is now flattening this gradient. Drawing on eBird, a citizen-science platform built by Cornell University, the team examined more than 10,000 bird species on five continents. They divided the globe into one-square-kilometre cells, kept only those with enough records to capture at least 95% of local diversity, and labelled each one urban, suburban or natural. On average, cities held 32% fewer species than nearby natural land, but the shortfall reached 42% close to the equator and dropped to 12% at 65 degrees of latitude. The authors link this partly to heavier urbanisation in tropical cities and partly to tropical species coping less well with change. Suburbs and greener cities lost less.

Beş ifade

  • latitudinal diversity gradient: enlemsel çeşitlilik eğimi (ekvatora yaklaştıkça artan tür çeşitliliği)
  • citizen science: gönüllülerin veri topladığı vatandaş bilimi
  • flatten: düzleştirmek, farkı azaltmak
  • shortfall: açık, eksiklik
  • cope with: başa çıkmak, uyum sağlamak

YDS mini sorusu

According to the passage, cities near the equator lose a larger share of their bird species partly because ----.

  1. the diversity gradient there has been fading for tens of thousands of years
  2. earlier studies of tropical regions relied on smaller and more local datasets
  3. citizen scientists in the tropics recorded fewer sightings than those elsewhere
  4. urbanisation there is heavier and many tropical species adapt poorly to change
  5. predation and pollination in tropical cities have been disturbed by urban growth

The researchers attribute the steeper tropical losses both to more intense urban development in tropical cities and to the weaker ability of many tropical birds to handle changing conditions.
