NASA uyduları rekor düzeyde olabilecek bir El Niño’yu izliyor

NASA Satellites Follow a Potentially Record-Setting El Niño

Metin

NASA satellites are tracking what could become an exceptionally powerful El Niño. As of October, NOAA estimated an 83% probability that the strongest event since 1950 is under way. El Niño, a natural pattern that returns roughly every two to seven years, warms parts of the equatorial Pacific. Early signs appeared in January 2026, when a Kelvin wave, a long, slow pulse of warm water, was spotted near Micronesia. As such waves carry heat eastward, the air above warms and rises, weakening the trade winds and letting eastern sea levels and temperatures climb further. By early April the warm water had reached the eastern Pacific, where the sea surface is now about 1.7°C above the long-term average. The ocean’s colour is changing as well: NASA’s PACE satellite shows equatorial waters turning bluer, because weaker winds bring fewer nutrients up from the deep, so phytoplankton become less abundant.

Beş ifade

  • under way: başlamış, sürmekte olan
  • pulse: dalga, atım
  • trade winds: alize rüzgârları
  • long-term average: uzun dönem ortalaması
  • abundant: bol, çok sayıda

YDS mini sorusu

According to the passage, equatorial Pacific waters are appearing bluer this year because ----.

  1. Kelvin waves are carrying the phytoplankton eastward toward South America
  2. higher sea levels in the east are diluting the green-coloured phytoplankton
  3. the PACE satellite now records ocean colour across a wider range of light
  4. warm surface water is helping phytoplankton spread across the eastern Pacific
  5. weaker winds bring fewer nutrients up, so phytoplankton become less abundant

Because the slackening trade winds lift less nutrient-rich deep water to the surface, phytoplankton grow scarcer and the normally greenish equatorial Pacific takes on a bluer tone.
