Reinforced Vertebrae Protect Plunge-Diving Seabirds

Metin

Gannets and boobies can strike the sea headfirst at roughly 70 miles per hour without breaking their long necks. University of Washington researchers investigated how their anatomy survives this compression. They CT-scanned museum specimens from birds with different feeding styles and built three-dimensional models of the neck vertebrae. Compared with non-divers, plunge-diving birds had shorter, wider and thicker vertebrae. Gannets and boobies also possessed an extra contact surface, called an articular facet, between several vertebrae near the top of the neck. The researchers propose that these facets limit backward bending when a bird hits the water at an angle and direct the load down the cervical column. Smaller kingfishers lacked the additional facet but independently evolved similarly blocklike vertebrae. Despite differences in size, the groups experienced comparable force per unit of neck area. The anatomical link may eventually help palaeontologists recognize plunge-diving behaviour in fossil birds, although the team still needs to examine force transfer in greater detail.

Beş ifade

  • plunge-diving bird: suya dik dalış yapan kuş
  • cervical vertebra: boyun omuru
  • compressive force: sıkıştırma kuvveti
  • articular facet: eklem yüzeyi
  • force transfer: kuvvet aktarımı

YDS mini sorusu

How may the extra articular facets help gannets and boobies during a high-speed dive?

  1. They may permit wider sideways head rotation while the birds search beneath the surface for nearby moving schools of fish
  2. They may shorten the cervical column so its fifteen vertebrae form a straighter line before the bird reaches water
  3. They may distribute peak impact through nearby muscles and redirect the load toward the bird’s head after contact
  4. They may restrict backward bending during angled entry and safely channel the resulting load down the reinforced cervical column
  5. They may reduce the total impact force by giving larger seabirds proportionally smaller vertebrae than those of kingfishers

Doğru cevap: D

Araştırmacılara göre eklem yüzeyleri, kuş suya açılı girdiğinde boynun geriye doğru bükülmesini sınırlar ve yükün boyun omurları boyunca aktarılmasına yardım eder. Doğru cevap D’dir.

The extra facets appear to prevent backward bending during angled impact and transfer the load down the cervical column.
