Climate Refuges Could Give Harlequin Toads a Safer Return

Metin

A fungal disease called chytridiomycosis has devastated amphibians and pushed many harlequin toads towards extinction. Releasing captive-bred animals has often failed because the fungus remains widespread in their former habitat. Researchers and their partners therefore used models of temperature, humidity and seasonal disease severity to map climatic refuges in Panama. These are places suitable for frogs but frequently unsuitable for medium or high-intensity fungal infection. Most surviving harlequin toad species were found only where more than 80 percent of seasons restricted severe disease, supporting the model’s value for ranking possible release sites. One species was an exception, which is consistent with evidence that it may have evolved resistance. The maps can also guide searches for overlooked wild populations whose genes could strengthen managed groups. Some risky areas may become less favourable to the fungus as the climate changes, although warming could harm cool-adapted mountain frogs. Field surveys and future release trials will test whether the predicted refuges genuinely improve survival.

Beş ifade

  • captive-bred animal: kontrollü ortamda yetiştirilmiş hayvan
  • climatic refuge: iklimsel sığınak
  • disease severity: hastalığın şiddeti
  • evolved resistance: evrimleşmiş direnç
  • release trial: doğaya salım denemesi

YDS mini sorusu

What is the main practical advantage of mapping climatic refuges for harlequin toads?

  1. It guarantees that climate change will eliminate the fungus from every mountainous habitat in Panama.
  2. It identifies laboratory conditions in which captive frogs can be kept permanently without field monitoring.
  3. It shows that all surviving species already possess the same level of genetic resistance to the disease.
  4. It makes seasonal information unnecessary when conservationists assess the severity of fungal infection.
  5. It helps conservationists prioritise release and survey sites where disease pressure is likely to be lower.

By ranking places where seasonal conditions suppress severe fungal infection, the maps direct releases and surveys towards sites with better prospects for survival.
