Renovation Reveals Roman Life Beneath Bath’s Assembly Rooms

Metin

Renovation of the Bath Assembly Rooms has given archaeologists rare access to ground hidden beneath the Georgian building since it opened in 1771. Excavators found a network of Roman ditches and dozens of objects, including coins, pottery, glass, roof tiles and part of a military helmet. The helmet fragment may indicate that soldiers helped construct the Roman settlement and its roads. Researchers also think the site lay in a suburb of Aquae Sulis, the town centred on Bath’s hot springs and temple of Sulis Minerva. This location shifts attention beyond famous monumental baths towards ordinary residents who may have operated small shops supplying food and pottery. The same project previously uncovered Georgian wig curlers, pipes and wine bottles, connecting several layers of social history at one address. Because the Assembly Rooms long prevented excavation underneath, the current work is providing an unusual view of how Bath developed across Roman, Georgian and literary eras.

The suburban setting and helmet fragment point to ordinary commercial life as well as possible military participation in building the Roman town and its roads.
