Maui yangınlarından sonra metal maruziyeti devam etti

Metal Exposure Persisted After the Maui Wildfires

Metin

A University of Hawaiʻi study examined 1,400 Maui adults between six and eighteen months after the 2023 wildfires to investigate longer-term environmental health effects. Researchers measured 24 metals in urine and assessed lung function during the same visits. Compared with United States reference data, participants showed much higher concentrations of several metals, including antimony at nearly forty times the reference level. Across three statistical approaches, greater combined metal exposure was associated with multiple signs of abnormal lung function. However, the team cautions that the results do not identify a single source. Hawaiʻi’s geology, diet, former agricultural and industrial activity, wildfire debris and the remobilisation of older pollutants may all have contributed. Because no comparable measurements were collected before the fires, the study cannot determine how much exposure was caused directly by the disaster. The researchers therefore call for long-term biomonitoring and environmental sampling that extends beyond short-term checks of smoke and airborne particles.

Beş ifade

  • combined metal exposure: birleşik metal maruziyeti
  • reference level: karşılaştırma için kullanılan referans düzeyi
  • abnormal lung function: anormal akciğer fonksiyonu
  • remobilise pollutants: kirleticileri yeniden harekete geçirmek
  • long-term biomonitoring: uzun süreli biyolojik izleme

YDS mini sorusu

Why can the study not determine exactly how much of the measured metal burden came from the wildfires?

  1. It lacks pre-fire measurements and several possible environmental and historical sources may overlap.
  2. It assessed only smoke particles and did not collect any biological samples from Maui residents.
  3. It found identical metal concentrations in every community, leaving no variation for researchers to analyse.
  4. It excluded metals associated with agriculture, industry, geology and diet before comparing exposure patterns.
  5. It measured lung function years before the disaster but never repeated the tests after residents returned.

Doğru cevap: A

Bu yüzden yangının kesin payı hesaplanamaz; doğru cevap A’dır.

Without a pre-fire baseline, researchers cannot separate the wildfire contribution precisely from geological, dietary, historical and ongoing sources of metal exposure.
