Metin
A NASA-led study has produced the most detailed map yet of the bedrock concealed beneath Greenland’s vast ice sheet. The researchers used Ice Flow Perturbation Analysis, which detects faint bumps and dips on the ice surface and works backwards to infer the buried terrain. They manually mapped 1,943 subglacial valleys; roughly one third had not been identified before, while many known valleys extend hundreds of kilometres farther inland than earlier maps suggested. Wide branching angles indicate that groundwater may have helped erode the valleys before the ice sheet formed. Long, unusually straight valleys in west-central Greenland also hint at a tectonic influence that scientists do not yet fully understand. The findings matter beyond reconstructing geological history. Ice becomes thicker and flows faster where valleys channel it, deepening the landscape in turn. A more accurate picture of this topography should therefore improve long-term projections of how retreating ice will move towards Greenland’s interior.
Beş ifade
- concealed bedrock: gizli, örtülü ana kaya
- infer the terrain: arazi yapısını dolaylı verilerden çıkarmak
- subglacial valley: buzul altı vadisi
- branching angle: dallanma açısı
- tectonic influence: tektonik etki
YDS mini sorusu
Why can the new valley map improve projections of Greenland’s future ice loss?
- Because valleys guide and accelerate ice flow, so their true extent helps predict how retreat may spread inland.
- Because the method directly measures every change in groundwater pressure below the ice sheet in real time.
- Because newly identified valleys prove that tectonic activity has recently melted most of Greenland’s coastal ice.
- Because replacing satellite observations with manual surveys removes uncertainty from short-term weather forecasts.
- Because the map shows that the buried landscape no longer affects the direction or speed of moving glaciers.

Doğru cevap: A
Doğru cevap A’dır.
