A Better-Timed Nitrogen Cycle Could Cut Farm Pollution

Metin

A global analysis suggests that farming can reduce air pollution and greenhouse-gas emissions by coordinating the many stages of the soil nitrogen cycle. Researchers examined 2,235 comparisons from 210 experimental sites. Replacing synthetic fertiliser with organic materials such as manure, crop residues and biochar lowered nitrous oxide emissions by an average of 21.8 percent and ammonia emissions by 40.6 percent. However, the main explanatory factor was not whether any single soil process became faster or slower. It was “synchrony”: how closely mineralisation, microbial uptake, nitrification and denitrification worked together. When these stages fall out of step, intermediate nitrogen compounds accumulate and escape into the atmosphere. The authors therefore compare the cycle to a production line in which a bottleneck creates waste. Their modelling indicates that better coordination could deliver particularly large gains in European croplands for nitrous oxide and African croplands for ammonia. The findings favour locally tailored management over simply replacing one fertiliser category with another.

Beş ifade

  • nitrogen cycle: azot döngüsü

  • locally tailored management: yerel koşullara uyarlanmış yönetim

YDS mini sorusu

What does the study identify as the strongest explanation for reduced nitrogen emissions?

  1. The complete removal of soil microbes from fields treated with organic material
  2. A uniform increase in the speed of every stage in the soil nitrogen cycle
  3. Closer coordination among processes that release, transform and absorb nitrogen
  4. The use of one identical fertiliser policy across all agricultural regions
  5. A deliberate accumulation of intermediate nitrogen compounds in cultivated soil
Cevabı ve açıklamasını göster

Doğru cevap: C

Çalışma, tek tek süreçlerin hızından çok mineralizasyon, mikrobiyal alım, nitrifikasyon ve denitrifikasyon arasındaki eşgüdümün kayıpları açıkladığını buluyor. Bu nedenle doğru cevap C’dir.

Lower emissions were most strongly associated with synchrony among nitrogen-cycle stages rather than the speed of any single process.
