New Sea Spiders Fill a Biodiversity Gap

Metin

University of British Columbia researchers have described two sea spider species new to science, the first such additions recorded in the Salish Sea for almost a century. The team collected specimens at depths of up to 18 metres around several coastal locations and combined detailed imaging with DNA analysis. One species, Callipallene pilosuspedes, has red eyes, long spines on its lower legs and flexible egg-carrying limbs that it can use like combs for grooming. Only one specimen was found. The other, Tanystylum kiixin, has less dexterous limbs and was often covered by tiny parasites living among debris on its body. Beyond their unusual appearance, the discoveries address a practical scientific gap. Researchers generated genetic information for species that had never been sequenced and created a regional identification guide. Knowing which marine invertebrates live in the area is a necessary first step toward measuring how climate change and human disturbance affect them and designing effective protection.

Beş ifade

  • marine invertebrate: deniz omurgasızı
  • detailed imaging: ayrıntılı görüntüleme
  • dexterous limb: becerikli, çevik uzuv
  • genetic information: genetik bilgi
  • fill a gap: bir boşluğu gidermek

YDS mini sorusu

Why is the identification of the two species scientifically important beyond adding new names to a database?

  1. It provides baseline knowledge needed to track environmental effects on poorly understood marine animals.
  2. It proves that every sea spider in the Salish Sea can groom itself with specialised limbs.
  3. It shows that the two species recently migrated from Antarctica because coastal water became warmer.
  4. It confirms that parasites protect small arthropods from all forms of human disturbance.
  5. It eliminates the need for future field seasons by documenting the region’s complete biodiversity.
Cevabı ve açıklamasını göster

Doğru cevap: A

Documenting and identifying local species creates the baseline required to measure environmental change and plan their protection.
