Coal-Powered Growth Creates a Public-Health Trade-Off

Metin

An Oxford-led study has traced a difficult trade-off in India’s economic and energy transition. Between 2000 and 2020, rising incomes helped millions of households adopt cleaner cooking fuels, reducing exposure to smoke indoors. At the same time, electricity demand almost quadrupled, and coal supplied 76 percent of that demand. Researchers combined satellite observations, atmospheric modelling, energy and socioeconomic records, and mortality data. They found that sulphate formed from coal-related sulphur dioxide became a larger share of urban airborne particles. The power sector’s estimated contribution to urban aerosol pollution rose from 16 to 36 percent, while annual urban deaths attributable to fine-particle exposure increased from about 670,000 to 870,000. Industry also remained a major source, so coal power was not the only cause. The researchers argue that development itself is not the problem: cleaner household energy brings real benefits, but the electricity supporting those gains must also become cleaner.

Beş ifade

  • energy transition: enerji dönüşümü
  • clean cooking fuel: temiz yemek pişirme yakıtı
  • airborne particle: havada asılı parçacık
  • attributable death: belirli bir etkene atfedilen ölüm
  • public-health trade-off: halk sağlığı açısından karşılıklı ödünleşim

YDS mini sorusu

Which conclusion best reflects the central trade-off identified by the study?

  1. Economic growth reduced both indoor and outdoor pollution because most new electricity came from renewable sources.
  2. Industrial emissions disappeared as coal plants became the only measurable source of fine particles in cities.
  3. Cleaner household cooking brought health gains, but coal-based electricity growth increased dangerous outdoor pollution.
  4. Falling electricity demand forced households to return to smoky fuels despite higher average incomes.
  5. Satellite observations showed that urban deaths declined even while sulphate formed a larger share of aerosols.

Cleaner cooking reduced household exposure, yet the coal-heavy electricity expansion raised urban fine-particle pollution and its associated death burden.
