The World Health Organization has issued guidance designed to widen informed contraceptive choice. It estimates that 164 million women who wish to delay or avoid pregnancy use no contraception. Among the updated recommendations, combined oral pills may be taken for extended periods of up to six months or continuously for up to a year, while contraceptive implants may remain in use for as long as five years. WHO also recognizes mifepristone, taken within five days of unprotected sex, as an additional emergency option supported by current evidence. Expansion does not mean accepting every method: the organization calls for more safety research on ormeloxifene and advises against adding quinestrol-containing pills to national programmes because evidence is limited and serious adverse events have been reported. The guidance also considers future male methods. Survey results suggest substantial interest, and WHO has defined desired standards for safety, effectiveness, acceptability and affordability to guide developers. Several reversible candidates are now in advanced clinical trials.
