What Newborn Attention May Reveal About Early Development

Metin

A Cambridge study has revisited whether average differences in social attention can be detected after birth. Researchers tested 130 infants only hours old by showing them two videos side by side: a moving human face and a Newton’s cradle made of swinging metal balls. Newborns overall looked longer at the face. On average, however, girls devoted a greater proportion of viewing time to the social image, while boys spent relatively more time watching the object. Because postnatal experience had not yet occurred, the team argues that prenatal factors such as hormones or genes may contribute to these group-level patterns. The study used more controlled conditions than a similar experiment from 2000, and analysts who tracked babies’ gaze did not know each infant’s sex or which stimulus was being viewed. The researchers stress that the averages do not describe every child and cannot determine later development. They propose that prenatal biology and postnatal experience interact rather than acting as competing explanations.

Beş ifade

  • social attention: sosyal uyaranlara yönelen dikkat
  • side by side: yan yana
  • group-level pattern: grup düzeyindeki örüntü
  • controlled conditions: kontrollü koşullar
  • competing explanations: birbiriyle yarışan açıklamalar

YDS mini sorusu

Which interpretation of the findings is most consistent with the researchers’ caution?

  1. Newborn girls always prefer faces, whereas newborn boys consistently avoid social images.
  2. Cultural expectations cannot influence attention because all relevant differences are fixed at birth.
  3. Prenatal factors may shape average early tendencies, but experience and individual variation remain important.
  4. The experiment establishes a direct cause of autism by comparing faces with a moving metal object.
  5. The results are unreliable because the analysts knew each infant’s sex while measuring gaze.

Doğru cevap: C

Çalışma doğum öncesi etkenlerin ortalama dikkat farklılıklarına katkıda bulunabileceğini söylüyor; ancak gruplar içinde büyük çeşitlilik bulunduğunu ve sonraki deneyimlerin gelişimle etkileştiğini özellikle vurguluyor. C seçeneği bu temkinli yorumu yansıtıyor.

The observed averages suggest a prenatal contribution, but they neither define every infant nor determine development independently of later experience.
