A newly described amoeba has set a heat-survival record for eukaryotes, organisms whose cells contain a nucleus and other membrane-bound structures. Researchers found Incendiamoeba cascadensis in hot water at California’s Lassen Volcanic National Park. In laboratory tests, it reproduced at 63 degrees Celsius, remained mobile at 64 degrees and recovered after five minutes at 70 degrees, although exposure to 80 degrees was fatal. The previous reproductive limit for eukaryotes was 60 degrees. Genetic analysis revealed several possible survival mechanisms, including genes that protect DNA, maintain protein folding and help the cell sense its surroundings. Some of its proteins also carry strong positive surface charges resembling those in heat-tolerant bacteria and archaea. Related genetic traces found in geothermal samples from other regions suggest that similar amoebas may be widespread. The discovery broadens estimates of where complex life could persist, but the researchers caution that temperature alone is insufficient: acidity, oxygen, water, pressure, food and a supportive ecosystem also matter.
Beş ifade
- heat-survival record: sıcakta hayatta kalma rekoru
- membrane-bound structure: zarla çevrili yapı
- protein folding: protein katlanması
- genetic trace: genetik iz
- supportive ecosystem: yaşamı destekleyen ekosistem
YDS mini sorusu
What broader conclusion do the researchers draw from the discovery of the fire amoeba?
- All organisms with a nucleus can reproduce at temperatures above 70 degrees Celsius.
- Temperature is the only environmental factor that determines whether complex life can survive.
- The amoeba depends on simpler cells because it lacks mechanisms for protecting its own DNA.
- Genetic traces prove that identical amoebas inhabit every geothermal region on Earth.
- Complex cells may tolerate more heat than assumed, though survival still depends on other conditions.
