Satellite images reveal how dramatically Lake Powell has contracted. In September 2026, the reservoir stood at 3,517.24 feet, below its previous record low from 2023. Its water supply depends heavily on snow melting in the mountains of the Upper Colorado Basin. Yet the winter of 2025–26 brought unusually little snow, and periods of exceptional warmth diminished the snowpack further. Consequently, spring runoff could not restore the lake as it normally would. The shortage matters far beyond the shoreline: the Colorado River system supplies water and electricity to more than 40 million people and irrigates extensive farmland. Although the lake remained above the level at which hydropower becomes ineffective, officials released water from another reservoir and reduced outflow towards Lake Mead to protect it. NASA-supported tools now use satellite observations to help communities assess drought across the basin. The images make a long-running water crisis visible, but they also illustrate why careful monitoring is essential for difficult management decisions.
Beş ifade
- snowpack: birikmiş kar örtüsü
- spring runoff: ilkbaharda erimeyle oluşan yüzey akışı
- reservoir: baraj gölü, su rezervuarı
- diminish: azaltmak, küçültmek
- outflow: dışarıya su akışı
YDS mini sorusu
Why did the usual spring increase in Lake Powell’s water level fail to occur?
- Sparse mountain snow and unusual warmth left too little meltwater to replenish it.
- Satellite instruments could no longer measure the lake after winter storms.
- A newly built dam prevented the Colorado River from entering the reservoir.
- Officials stopped all upstream releases to increase flows into Lake Mead.
- The lake had already fallen below the level needed for effective hydropower.

Doğru cevap: A
Dağlarda az kar birikmesi ve alışılmadık sıcaklık, eriyerek göle ulaşacak suyu azalttı. Bu nedenle ilkbaharda beklenen seviye artışı gerçekleşmedi; diğer seçenekler neden-sonuç ilişkisini yanlış kuruyor.
