İki yüzüncü yıl fotoğraf taramalarıyla Amerika’ya yeniden bakmak

Revisiting America Through Bicentennial Photo Surveys

Metin

A Smithsonian American Art Museum exhibition brings together photographic surveys made around the United States’ 1976 bicentennial. The display contains 225 images by more than 70 photographers, many of whom documented familiar places and everyday lives in their own communities. A federal arts programme originally funded 72 regional surveys from the late 1970s into the early 1980s. By gathering work from the museum and collections elsewhere, curators have reunited material that had not been comprehensively viewed together for decades. Their research also uncovered previously unseen photographs of Memphis’s Beale Street in negatives preserved from one survey. The exhibition places these projects alongside earlier government-supported photography, including nineteenth-century views of the American West and Depression-era documentation. Its four geographic sections show industrial towns, urban streets, changing landscapes and roadside culture, rather than offering a single official portrait of the nation. In this context, photography becomes both a historical record and an expression of how communities saw themselves at a particular moment.

YDS mini sorusu

Why does the exhibition place the bicentennial surveys beside older photographic projects?

  1. To argue that the newer images were all copied from nineteenth-century negatives.
  2. To show that federal support for photography ended after the Great Depression.
  3. To establish that each region was recorded by precisely the same photographers.
  4. To suggest that local communities had no influence on the images made there.
  5. To reveal a longer documentary tradition and show how its perspectives evolved.
