Yapay zekâ opioid reçetelerini daha isabetli kılabilir mi?

Could AI Make Opioid Prescribing More Precise?

Metin

Pain after the same dental operation can vary greatly between patients, yet opioid prescriptions are often standardised before clinicians know how each person will recover. A Harvard School of Dental Medicine paper considers whether machine learning could support more individual decisions. Models could combine clinical, behavioural, biological and social information to estimate who may need stronger pain relief, who faces a higher risk of prolonged use or misuse, and who would benefit from closer monitoring. This could reduce “just-in-case” prescribing: studies cited by the authors found that only 7 percent of patients needed opioids after routine wisdom-tooth surgery, while more than half of prescribed tablets after dental procedures went unused. However, the goal is not simply to minimise prescriptions, because some patients genuinely need additional relief. The authors also stress that most existing studies are retrospective, external validation is limited, and results may differ across populations. AI should therefore inform clinical judgement rather than replace it.

Beş ifade

  • postoperative pain: ameliyat sonrası ağrı
  • prolonged use: uzun süreli kullanım
  • closer monitoring: daha yakından izleme
  • retrospective study: geriye dönük çalışma
  • clinical judgement: klinik değerlendirme

YDS mini sorusu

Which statement best reflects the authors’ position on using AI in opioid prescribing?

  1. It may support personalised decisions, but limited validation means clinicians must retain responsibility.
  2. It should be used mainly to eliminate opioid treatment after every routine dental procedure.
  3. It can predict pain accurately without considering behavioural or biological differences between patients.
  4. It is already more reliable than clinical judgement across all populations and healthcare settings.
  5. It is useful only while patients remain in hospital under continuous professional supervision.

Doğru cevap: A

Yazarlar yapay zekânın kişiselleştirilmiş kararları destekleyebileceğini, ancak sınırlı dış doğrulama ve nüfuslar arası performans farkları nedeniyle klinisyenin yerini almaması gerektiğini savunuyor. Doğru seçenek bu iki yönü birlikte yansıtıyor.

AI may improve personalised prescribing, but limited external validation means it should support rather than replace clinical judgement.
