An apparent 25 percent rise in Czechia’s recorded suicide deaths did not show that the situation had suddenly worsened. Instead, it resulted from a four-month effort to link health records with police data and correct incomplete classifications. Doctors initially record a cause of death using the information available at the scene, while police investigations may later uncover additional evidence. Because the two systems had shared little information, some suicides had been registered as accidents or deaths of undetermined intent. After uncertain cases were reviewed under strict confidentiality rules, the national total for 2024 rose from 1,249 to 1,561, while the undetermined category fell. The revision also revealed regions and age groups whose needs had been obscured by earlier statistics. WHO therefore warns policymakers not to treat the corrected total as a year-to-year trend. It should serve as a more accurate baseline for directing prevention resources and measuring future change.
