Fossils normally preserve the shape of extinct animals rather than the sounds they produced. Yet some Jurassic insects left behind unusually informative evidence: the microscopic structures on their wings that were used to make calls. By analysing these structures and comparing them with those of living katydids, researchers estimated the pitch and rhythm of noises heard about 165 million years ago. Artificial-intelligence modelling then helped the team create a plausible reconstruction of the ancient soundscape. Some calls were probably within the range of human hearing, whereas others may have been ultrasonic. The findings suggest that early acoustic communication was already complex and may have helped insects attract mates or avoid competing species. Although the reconstructed calls cannot be confirmed directly, the study demonstrates how physical fossils can reveal aspects of behaviour that once seemed permanently lost.

YDS mini sorusu
It can be inferred from the passage that the researchers ----.
- relied entirely on the behaviour of modern insects rather than fossil evidence
- proved that all Jurassic insect calls could be heard by human beings
- used artificial intelligence to determine the exact purpose of every ancient call
- combined preserved anatomy with modern comparisons to estimate lost sounds
- concluded that acoustic communication first appeared 165 million years ago
